Cotton is one of the most widely used tissue for its inimitable characteristics of natural fiber, versatile and pleasant to the skin. When we check the garment label, the presence of a percentage of cotton reassures us and it guarantees us the quality of the product.
However, it’s also important to know that the cotton plant requires large amounts of water and pesticides. It also represents the 2.5% of all arable land and it’s cultivated for the 90% in the developing countries.
This plant has, for these reasons, a great influence on both world environment and economy! “Better Cotton Initiative” (BCI) was created for this, it provides fundamental principles and criteria for a responsible production within a support system for the producers of cotton. Some of these rules are to preserve the benevolent insects and to prevent the development of pests for reducing the pesticide use, to control and optimize the use of water, to respect farmers and lands together in the long term.
This is an important initiative which was signed by major jeans manufacturers like Levi’s and H&M. Good management is the basis for a better world built on rules shared by all!
