Today we celebrate World Earth Day, an occasion that invites us to reflect on our environmental impact and on the collective and individual actions needed to protect our planet. Born in 1970 following an oil disaster in California, this day was later recognized by the UN as a moment of celebration for the conservation of the Earth's natural resources. Among the most polluting industrial sectors in the world, fashion holds a sad record that we often ignore, hidden behind the apparent harmlessness of a simple t-shirt or a pair of jeans.
Fashion: a burden that has become unsustainable for the planet
The UN data are alarming: the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions and 20% of global water waste. It takes about 2,700 liters of water to produce a single cotton t-shirt, equivalent to what a person drinks in 2.5 years. The production of a pair of jeans requires up to 7,500 liters.
This devastating water footprint is accompanied by other critical environmental impacts:
- The textile industry releases half a million tons of synthetic microfibers into the oceans every year;
- The fast fashion model generates 92 million tons of textile waste annually;
- 35% of the microplastics present in the oceans come from the washing of synthetic fabrics.
The Atacama Desert: a global fashion cemetery
A striking example of the consequences of this system is the Atacama Desert in Chile, which has become an open-air dump for clothes discarded by the Western world. Every year, an estimated 59,000 tons of excess clothing are dumped into this fragile ecosystem, creating mountains of fabrics that will not biodegrade for centuries. These "textile dunes" release harmful chemicals into the soil and air when they are burned or buried.
Why preserving biodiversity is essential
Biodiversity, also threatened by the practices of the fashion industry, is essential for our planet:
- It ensures the balance of ecosystems that provide us with clean air, water and food;
- It offers natural resources for medicines and new scientific discoveries;
- It contributes to climate resilience, helping to mitigate the effects of climate change;
- It represents an invaluable cultural and natural heritage for future generations.
The Regenesi vision: beauty is sustainable
At Regenesi we take concrete action for a positive alternative in which the pleasure generated by fashion is maintained, integrating it into a sustainable vision of resources. Our philosophy is based on three pillars:
From waste to beauty: we transform waste into precious resources for fashion and design. Our Re-Flag collection is made with over 95% recycled polyester from plastic bottles, where 30 bottles become 1 kg of felt. Even the velvet in the Metamorphosis and Re-cap collections comes entirely from recycled post-consumer materials, ensuring the absence of harmful chemical elements.
Eco-design for timeless fashion: we create products that transcend seasonal trends and market segmentations, designed to last and reduce the consumerist cycle of fast fashion. Each of our products is designed to be not only beautiful but also regenerable.
Italian artisan production: we enhance the know-how and quality of Italian manufacturing, creating genderless collections that celebrate individuality and reduce artificial market divisions, combining artisan tradition and sustainable innovation.
As we celebrate the Earth today, let's remember that every purchasing choice is a vote for the future we desire. Sustainability is not a passing trend but an absolute necessity. The shape of a possible future is circular: using resources sparingly, recycling endlessly and creating beauty while respecting the planet we call home.
On this Earth Day 2025, let's reflect on how much what we wear weighs on the planet and choose to make a difference, one sustainable garment at a time.
